E-commerce product video: formats, weight and Shopify integration

Product videos increase conversion rates by 80% on average — but only when they are properly integrated. A heavy, autoplay video can wreck your Core Web Vitals and send your SEO downward faster than it lifts conversions.

Adding product videos to your Shopify store is a two-step process: technical integration (format, weight, hosting) and performance optimization (LCP impact, autoplay policy, mobile behavior). Getting both right simultaneously is what separates a video that converts from one that just slows the page.

Technical specs for product videos

Format and codec

MP4 with H.264 video codec and AAC audio. This combination works on all browsers and devices without polyfill. WebM is a valid alternative with slightly better compression but lower compatibility (no Safari on iOS 15 and below).

Resolution and weight

1080p (1920×1080) at 2 to 5 Mbps for a 30-second video. Target: under 30 MB for product demos. Compress with HandBrake (free) or FFmpeg before upload. Shopify re-encodes internally but starting from a clean source is better.

Autoplay rules

Chrome and Safari allow silent autoplay (muted). Autoplay with sound is blocked by default on all browsers. Always use a WebP or JPEG poster image to show on load — it prevents the blank video frame that hurts LCP.

Autoplay video with sound is blocked by Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge by default. If your theme enables autoplay with sound, it will silently fail for 95% of visitors while still loading the video file — maximum weight penalty, zero conversion benefit.

How Seegea handles product video metadata

Seegea does not compress or host videos directly — Shopify handles that via its CDN. What Seegea manages is the product media metadata at catalog scale:

  • Video position in the media gallery (main vs supplementary)
  • Video alt text for accessibility and SEO
  • Poster image selection — Seegea selects or generates the best frame as a WebP thumbnail
  • Bulk video linking — associate a YouTube URL to hundreds of products by column

Built in France between Annecy and Chantilly, Seegea manages all your product media — images and video metadata — from a single tabular interface, with immediate push to Shopify or PrestaShop.
