Adding a Shopify variant to an existing product takes 2 minutes from admin. But for a clean addition — with SKU, image, initial stock and correct price — here are the steps not to skip.
Shopify variant management
Step by step: add a Shopify variant
- Open the product in Shopify admin
- Scroll to the Variants section
- If the option exists (e.g. Size): click "Add variant" and enter the value (e.g. XXL)
- If the option doesn't exist: click "Add option" first, name the option, then add values
- Enter the SKU (required for serious management)
- Set the price (defaults to main price)
- Set initial stock per location
- Associate an image if the variant has a specific visual
- Save
Limits to know
- 100 variants max per product. Hit the limit? Duplicate the product.
- 3 options max (size, color, material). No 4th level.
- Unique SKU recommended per variant — check before creating a new one.
Assign a SKU to every new variant at creation. A missing SKU complicates CSV exports, ERP connections and profitability analysis.
