Duplicating a Shopify product is useful for creating a listing variant, a seasonal product based on an existing one, or to speed up creation of similar listings. But native duplication has limits worth knowing before relying on it.
Shopify product management
What the Duplicate button copies
- Title (prefixed with "Copy of")
- HTML description
- Product images
- Variants (options, SKU, price, stock — with copied values)
- Weight, type, vendor, tags
- Status: draft by default
What the Duplicate button does not copy
- Metafields: not copied, must be recreated
- SEO title and meta description: empty on the duplicate
- Collection associations: not copied
- Handle: auto-generated from the new title
SEO trap: duplicate content
If you publish a duplicated product without editing title, description and handle, Shopify has two near-identical indexed listings. Google treats them as duplicate content and may downrank both. Always differentiate the duplicate before publishing.
