The Shopify handle is the slug identifier of a resource. Auto-generated from the title at creation, it forms the permanent URL of the page. Once indexed by Google, changing it without a redirect destroys accumulated SEO ranking.
Shopify URL SEO
Structure of a good Shopify handle
An SEO-effective handle follows these rules:
- Keywords first: "salomon-trail-shoes" rather than "shoes-salomon-trail"
- Lowercase only: uppercase can create potential duplicate URLs
- Hyphens (not underscores): Google treats underscores as part of a word
- No special characters: accents are encoded as %XX in URLs — unreadable
- Concise: 3 to 6 words maximum. Long URLs are truncated in SERPs.
Changing a handle without breaking SEO
- Edit the handle in Shopify admin (or via Seegea)
- Accept the automatic 301 redirect creation that Shopify offers
- Verify the redirect is active in Settings → Navigation → URL Redirects
- Update internal links (menus, collections) pointing to the old handle
- Monitor Google Search Console 30 days after — 404 crawl errors signal missing links
