Ungrouping variants is the reverse of grouping: transforming a variant into an independent product with its own listing, its own URL and its own SEO. It is a manual operation in Shopify — but one that may be necessary at scale.
Shopify variant management
When to ungroup Shopify variants
- Distinct SEO required: two "variants" targeting different keywords and needing separate pages
- Very different technical specs: the "variant" has too many unique attributes to fit in Shopify options
- Independent evolving range: each former variant has its own product lifecycle
- Logistics constraint: separate warehouses, different lead times, distinct suppliers
Manual ungrouping procedure
- Create a new Shopify product with the title of the variant to separate
- Copy all data: description, images, SKU, price, stock
- Add the new product to relevant collections
- Delete the variant from the parent product
- Verify the parent product remains consistent (at least one variant)
If the parent product only keeps one variant after ungrouping, simplify it: remove the variant options and convert to a simple product. This lightens the interface and clarifies the catalog.

FAQ
Common reasons: variants needing distinct SEO pages (different keywords), products with very different technical specs, ranges that evolve independently, or required separate logistics management.
