Product variations: model, edit and publish them cleanly

Whether you call them variations, variants or combinations, every e-commerce platform has a different way of modeling the same thing. Here is how to handle them cleanly on Shopify and PrestaShop.

Product variations are the selectable dimensions that make a product uniquely purchasable — size, color, material, voltage, language. Getting the model right before catalog import prevents the most painful cleanup tasks in e-commerce operations.

Shopify vs PrestaShop variation models, side by side

Shopify model

Options (Color, Size) + Values (Blue, M) = Variants. Up to 3 options and 100 variants per product. Each variant has its own price, SKU, barcode, weight, inventory and images. Metafields extend variants beyond the native fields.

PrestaShop model

Attributes (Color, Size) + Attribute values (Blue, M) = Combinations. No hard limit. Price, reference, EAN13, weight and stock are set at combination level. More flexible than Shopify, but also more complex to manage at scale.

Seegea unified view

Seegea maps both models into a single Excel-like grid. Shopify variants and PrestaShop combinations appear as expandable rows under their parent product. Bulk editing works identically regardless of platform.

Before bulk-editing variations, always filter to a test set of 5-10 products first. Validate the result in your CMS admin, then apply to the full catalog. Seegea checkpoints each operation so rollback is always available.

The right variation structure for Google Shopping

Google Shopping reads each variation as an individual product in your feed. For a 200-product catalog with an average of 10 variations each, that is 2,000 feed items. Each needs a valid GTIN, consistent title, correct price and in-stock status. A clean variation structure in your PIM is the only scalable way to maintain this.

Seegea surfaces missing GTINs, price inconsistencies and title gaps across all your variations in one dashboard view. Created in France between Annecy and Chantilly, our team supports the first catalog review by video call.

FAQ

Functionally the same thing: a specific purchasable version of a product. Shopify uses "variants", WooCommerce and PrestaShop use "variations" or "combinations". The modeling concept is identical: one parent product, multiple purchasable SKUs.
