Long product description: structuring 800+ words that convert

An 800-word product description sounds like an SEO chore. Done right, it is the highest-converting page element after images — because it answers every objection before the buyer has to ask.

The long product description serves two audiences simultaneously: the human buyer who is two clicks from adding to cart, and the Google crawler that decides whether your page ranks for the 50 long-tail queries your category generates. Serve both, and the page converts and ranks. Ignore either, and you lose both.

The 5-section structure that works for any category

Section 1: Hook (2-3 sentences)

The hook names the problem the buyer has without the product, then positions the product as the resolution. No adjectives. No exclamation marks. Just the core tension and its resolution in plain English.

Section 2: Benefits (3-5 bullets)

Each bullet: one outcome + one spec that proves it. "Stays dry for 8 hours (moisture-wicking 68% polyester)". Never list features in isolation. The spec exists to prove the benefit, not to show off the engineering.

Section 3: Specifications table

All attribute data: material %, dimensions (metric + imperial), weight, certifications, country of origin. Google reads tables as structured content. Buyers use them to make final decisions. Never omit this section.

Sections 4 and 5: operational details

Section 4 — Use & care: washing instructions (fashion), charging instructions (tech), application routine (beauty), assembly notes (home). This section reduces returns and customer service load. It also ranks for long-tail "how to care for X" queries.

Section 5 — Shipping & returns snippet: not a full policy — just the key information: delivery delay, free returns yes/no, country of manufacture for customs purposes. Keep it to 3-4 lines. The buyer needs it, and it reduces cart abandonment.

Never use the supplier specification sheet as the long description — even translated. Google detects duplicated manufacturer copy across thousands of e-commerce sites. A single rewrite pass that adds 3 sentences of original content is enough to differentiate, but a full original description is far better.

FAQ

400 to 1,000 words for most categories. Tech and luxury can go to 1,500 words if the complexity warrants it. Food and fast fashion: 400-600 words. Padding for length hurts more than it helps — every sentence must serve the reader.
