Product listing checklist: 24 items to validate before publishing

A product listing published with a missing GTIN, a duplicate description or an undersized image loses Google Shopping visibility from day one. This 24-point checklist catches every issue before publishing.

The product listing checklist below covers 24 validation points across four categories: SEO, media, Google Shopping compliance, and UX. Run it on every listing before publishing. Miss any point and you pay the cost in ranking, Shopping visibility or conversion rate.

The 24-point checklist

SEO (8 points)

1. H1 title: keyword + brand, 60-70 chars. 2. Meta title: 55-60 chars, keyword first. 3. Meta description: 140-155 chars, benefit + soft CTA. 4. URL slug: lowercase, hyphens, no stop words. 5. Long description: unique, 400+ words, structured. 6. Short description: outcome-first, 150-250 chars. 7. Internal links: at least 1 to a related collection. 8. Schema.org: Product + Offer + aggregateRating if reviews exist.

Media (6 points)

9. Minimum 3 images (hero + lifestyle + detail). 10. Hero image: neutral background, 1000x1000 min. 11. Images: no logo overlay, no watermark. 12. Image format: WebP, below 150KB each. 13. Alt text: descriptive on all images. 14. Video embed if product complexity warrants it (tech, luxury).

Google Shopping (6 points)

15. GTIN or MPN + identifier_exists field. 16. Brand field populated. 17. google_product_category: official taxonomy ID. 18. availability: in_stock / out_of_stock (real-time). 19. price: matches the page price exactly. 20. For apparel: gender + age_group + color + size.

UX validation (4 points)

  • 21. Price + shipping cost visible above the fold
  • 22. Return policy summary visible (1 line minimum)
  • 23. Real stock indicator if stock is limited
  • 24. Add-to-cart CTA: single, prominent, above the fold on mobile

The 4 qualitative checks (copy uniqueness, copy quality, image visual quality, brand voice) cannot be automated. But they are the ones that separate a listing that merely passes the checklist from one that actually converts. Never skip the human review step.
