Product meta title: 60 characters that drive clicks

The product meta title is the headline that appears in Google search results. Sixty characters to convince a buyer to click your listing instead of the one above or below it. This guide gives you the exact formula.

The product meta title is the most-read element of your SEO — and the most commonly left empty or auto-generated from the H1 title. When both are identical, you miss the opportunity to target a second set of keywords and differentiate your SERP appearance from competitors.

3 meta title mistakes that kill click-through rate

Using the same text as the H1

If meta title = H1, you miss a keyword. Use the meta title for a related secondary keyword or keyword variant. "Running Shoes Men Lightweight | Nike" (meta) vs "Nike Air Max 90 Men's Running Shoes" (H1).

Truncation at 60 chars

Google cuts meta titles mid-word at approximately 580 pixels width. "Men's Ultralight Carbon Fiber Running Shoes for Marathon Training | Bra..." destroys your SERP appearance. Keep it under 58 chars to be safe across all devices.

Keyword at the end

Google and users read left-to-right. Putting the most important keyword at position 1-3 of the meta title increases ranking weight and click-through rate. "Linen Shirt Men | Brand" beats "Brand Men's Summer Casual Linen Shirt".
Add a CTR-boosting tail to the meta title when you have 10+ chars to spare: "| Free returns" or "| Ships today" converts hesitant clicks. Only use it if it is true — Google may penalize misleading SERP copy.

FAQ

The H1 is the heading visible on the product page — it serves the visitor. The meta title is what Google shows in search results — it serves the crawler and the search user who has not yet visited. They can and should be different, using related keywords.
