Product URL slug: the rules that help you rank

The product URL slug is the most durable SEO element on a product page. Change it badly and you lose all inbound links and ranking history overnight. Get it right from the start and it works silently for years.

The product URL slug is the only SEO element you should treat as permanent. Everything else — title, description, images — can be updated iteratively. The slug is the anchor of your product page's identity in Google's index and in every inbound link on the web.

The 6 slug rules that hold up for years

Rule 1: lowercase-and-hyphens only

No uppercase. No underscores (Google treats them as word joiners, not separators). No spaces (they become %20). No special characters. Just lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens.

Rule 2: keyword first

Put your primary search term at the beginning of the slug, not at the end. Google gives more weight to early words in URLs. "nike-air-max-90" beats "shoes-running-nike-air-max-90".

Rule 3: 3-6 words maximum

Long slugs are hard to share, hard to read in SERPs, and dilute keyword signal. If your product is "Men's ultralight running shoes with carbon fiber plate", the slug is "mens-carbon-running-shoes".

Shopify auto-generates handles from the product title. If your titles are generic or code-based, your handles will be too. Set a slug governance rule before bulk-creating products. Fixing slugs retroactively is painful — redirects are mandatory for every change.

Auditing and fixing slugs at scale

A catalog with 3,000 products typically has hundreds of bad slugs: internal codes, duplicates (Shopify appends "-2" when a handle already exists), overly long strings, and uppercase characters that slipped through theme customizations.

Seegea surfaces all slug quality issues in the catalog audit view. Filter by issue type, select all affected products, fix slugs inline, and push to Shopify or PrestaShop. For changed slugs, Seegea flags the need for a 301 redirect before confirming the update. Built in France between Annecy and Chantilly, we help you define your slug governance rules on the first onboarding session.

FAQ

A slug is the part of the URL that identifies a specific product page — the text after the /products/ segment. In Shopify it is called a handle. In PrestaShop it is the link rewrite. It should be short, keyword-rich and permanently stable.
