SEO product title: the formula that ranks in 2026

The product title is the single most powerful SEO lever on a product page. It is also the most commonly wasted. The formula below works across 95% of e-commerce categories — and takes 90 seconds per product to apply.

The SEO product title works harder than any other element on the page. It appears in Google organic results, Google Shopping, social shares, browser tabs and email subject lines when someone shares the product. Getting it right at scale is one of the highest-ROI tasks in catalog management.

The universal title formula

Brand + Product type + Key attribute(s)

Examples:

  • Nike Air Max 90 White Leather Sneakers
  • Anker 65W GaN USB-C Charger 3-Port
  • Typology 2% Hyaluronic Acid Serum 30ml
  • IKEA Kallax 4x4 White Shelf Unit 147x147cm

What they all share: no adjectives, no exclamation marks, no promotional language, no internal code numbers.

Google Shopping titles

Google Shopping shows ~70 chars of the title. Pack the most important search terms in the first 35 chars. After the brand + type, add color or size if it is a primary search filter in your category.

Organic SEO titles (H1)

The H1 is a stronger ranking signal than the meta title. Keep it to 60-70 chars. Put the primary keyword first if you do not lead with the brand. Avoid duplication between H1 and meta title — use related keywords in the meta title.

Meta title (SERP snippet)

55-60 chars to avoid SERP truncation. Lead with the primary keyword + brand. Add a differentiator at the end if space allows: "| Free returns" or "| Ships today" for CTR lift.
CategoryTitle formulaKey attribute to include

TechBrand + model + specWattage / capacity
BeautyBrand + product + % activeVolume (ml/oz)
HomeBrand + type + sizeDimensions (cm)
FoodBrand + product + weightNet weight (g/kg)
Never keyword-stuff the title. "Women Running Shoes Nike Air Max Sneakers Sports Shoes 2026" will be suppressed by Google Shopping and flagged by Google organic. One primary keyword, one brand, one key attribute is enough.

Reformatting 2,000 titles in one week

Most catalogs have product titles that were written by the person who created the product, not by someone thinking about SEO. They look like internal codes ("REF-2024-BLU-M"), supplier names ("Supplier X blue polo shirt ref 4521") or generic terms ("Blue shirt"). Seegea identifies every title that violates the formula and rewrites them in bulk via AI, applying the brand + type + attribute structure. You review in the inline grid and approve with one click. Created in France between Annecy and Chantilly, we configure the title formula for your catalog on the first Google Meet session.

FAQ

60 to 70 characters for the H1 (display title). The meta title should be 55-60 chars to avoid truncation in search results. These are not the same field — use each for its own purpose.
