Short product description: 150 characters that sell

The short product description is the most read and most neglected element of a product listing. On mobile, it appears before the long description and often before the price. Those 150 characters must earn their keep.

On most Shopify and PrestaShop themes, the short product description appears directly under the product title, above the add-to-cart button. It is the first paragraph that a mobile visitor reads — and the one most teams write last, in 30 seconds, as an afterthought. That is a conversion problem.

The anatomy of a 150-character short description that converts

Three elements, in order:

  1. The outcome (what the buyer gets, not what the product is)
  2. The key differentiator (material, tech, certification, origin)
  3. The context (when, where, for whom — if space allows)

Fashion example

Weak: "Linen shirt for summer." Strong: "Stays cool in 35°C heat — 100% washed linen, relaxed fit, ethically made in Portugal." The strong version names an outcome, a material proof point and an origin trust signal in 90 characters.

Tech example

Weak: "Fast charging cable with braided nylon." Strong: "0 to 100% in 28 minutes — MFi-certified braided USB-C cable, tested for 20,000 bends." Specific numbers beat vague superlatives every time.

Beauty example

Weak: "Hydrating serum for all skin types." Strong: "72-hour hydration barrier — 2% hyaluronic acid formula, fragrance-free, tested on sensitive skin." Clinicals and certifications in the short desc build instant trust.

Write the short description last. Once you have the full long description, extract the single most important sentence from it. That is your short description. Then tighten to 150-200 characters.

Scaling short description writing with Seegea

For a 2,000-product catalog, short descriptions are often the field with the highest blank rate — because teams writing the long description run out of energy before filling in the short one. Seegea's AI generates both simultaneously. You review the short description in the inline grid, approve or edit in 30 seconds, and move to the next product. Built in France between Annecy and Chantilly, Seegea onboards your first batch live on Google Meet.

FAQ

150 to 250 characters is the sweet spot. Below 100 chars feels thin. Above 300 chars and it competes with the long description. On mobile displays (where most shopping happens), aim for 2 lines maximum.
