CSV product export: get a clean, re-importable catalog file

A CSV export is not just a button. Between variants spanning multiple rows, images stored as URLs, and accents that break, you have to prepare the export as much as the import.

A clean CSV export is the foundation of any backup, migration or external catalog analysis. Done wrong, you lose half the variants, images go orphan, and the file becomes useless.

This guide covers what a catalog CSV export should contain, how to get it on Shopify and PrestaShop, and how Seegea automates the process for teams that export several times a week.

The 3 main use cases

Backup before bulk edit

Always export the catalog before a massive change (prices, descriptions, categories). If things go sideways, yesterday's CSV is your safety net. Seegea does this automatically with every version.

Cross-CMS migration

Export from PrestaShop to import into Shopify, or the other way. Caveat: schemas differ, every column needs mapping.

Excel / Power BI reporting

Export to analyze margins, stock turn, completeness. Data teams pull a daily CSV into their warehouse.

Native Shopify export: what works and what is missing

The Shopify export produces a UTF-8 CSV with comma as separator, one row per variant. The file is re-importable as is (handy to migrate from a staging store to prod).

Limits: metafields are not natively exported, neither are collections. To get them, use an app like Matrixify or the Admin GraphQL API.

Native PrestaShop export: expect some gymnastics

The native PrestaShop export is limited to basic fields. Combinations, features, multiple images and specific prices need either direct SQL, or a dedicated module. That is where Seegea or Store Commander become useful.

Clean CSV tip: always export as UTF-8 with BOM if you open the file in French Excel afterwards. Without BOM, Excel reads it as Windows-1252 and breaks accents.

What Seegea adds on export

Seegea is primarily an inline editing tool, but it ships with a powerful CSV export: custom views, picked columns, scheduled export, end-of-export webhook. ERPs and marketing tools get a fresh catalog with zero human intervention.

Since every change creates a version, you can export the catalog state at a given date — useful to diff week over week.

CSV export + inline editing: the combo that changes everything

Matrixify and Ablestar bet everything on CSV. Seegea gives you a clean CSV when needed and an Excel-like grid for everything else. Teams that edited their catalog via export-edit-reimport shift to direct editing with automatic daily backup exports.
