Product watermark: protect your visuals without hurting SEO

Protecting your product images with a watermark is legitimate — but done wrong, it triggers Google Shopping rejections and reduces conversion. Here is how to watermark strategically without losing marketplace eligibility.

A product watermark serves two purposes: brand recognition and image theft deterrence. Done correctly, it is invisible to the customer but visible to scrapers. Done wrong, it gets your Google Shopping feed rejected and your conversion rate down. Here is the correct calibration.

The 3 watermark rules for e-commerce

Rule 1: no watermark on the main Google Shopping image

Google's policy prohibits promotional text, watermarks and borders on the main product image. Apply watermarks only to supplementary images (positions 2 to 10 in Shopify). The main packshot must remain clean.

Rule 2: opacity under 15%

A watermark above 20% opacity is visible and perceived as intrusive by customers — reducing click-through and add-to-cart rates. At 10-15% opacity in a corner, it is detectable in direct comparison but invisible during normal browsing.

Rule 3: vector logo only

Use a vector SVG logo scaled to 8-12% of image width. A rasterized PNG logo loses quality and shows artifacts on WebP images. The SVG is then composited onto the WebP at export time.

The most common mistake: applying the same watermark to all images including the main one, then getting the entire Google Shopping feed suspended. Set up your watermark workflow to apply only to images at position 2 and above in the Shopify media gallery.

Bulk watermarking with Seegea

Seegea applies watermarks in bulk from the catalog grid. The workflow:

  1. Upload your SVG logo watermark in Seegea settings (once, reused for all products)
  2. Select the products to watermark (multi-select or filters)
  3. Configure: position (corner), opacity (10-15%), apply to supplementary images only
  4. Preview — Seegea shows a before/after for the first 5 images
  5. Apply — watermarked images are pushed to Shopify or PrestaShop immediately

Seegea stores the pre-watermark version of each image. If you change your logo or decide to remove watermarks, Ctrl+Z restores the originals without re-uploading.

Built in France between Annecy and Chantilly, Seegea handles your complete product image pipeline — from compression to watermarking to alt text — with immediate push to your store.

FAQ

Google Shopping explicitly prohibits 'promotional text, watermarks or borders' on the main product image. However, a very subtle brand watermark (under 10% opacity, corner placement, no promotional text) is generally not flagged in practice. The safest approach: no watermark on the main image, watermark on supplementary images only.

Give your catalog the attention it deserves.
