Resize a product image: the right sizes for e-commerce

Product image sizing is not about picking one dimension and applying it everywhere. Google Shopping, Shopify retina zoom, mobile thumbnails and email marketing all require different dimensions — and serving the wrong size degrades both performance and conversion.

Every image in your catalog serves multiple contexts: product page hero, collection grid thumbnail, Google Shopping listing, email marketing, mobile app. Serving one giant image for all contexts wastes bandwidth and degrades performance. The solution is a clear size standard per use case — applied in bulk.

The standard e-commerce image size: 2048×2048 px

If you can only remember one size, it is 2048×2048 px in WebP. This single standard covers:

  • Retina zoom on Shopify product pages
  • Google Shopping (1000×1000 minimum easily met)
  • All marketplace main image requirements
  • Automatic generation of thumbnails by Shopify (600×600, 300×300, 100×100)

At WebP quality 82, a 2048×2048 product photo weighs 300-600 KB — well within performance budgets.

Resize with Photoshop batch

Image → Image Size → 2048×2048 px, Bicubic Sharper resampling. Save as WebP Q82. Batch via Actions (File → Automate → Batch). Workable for up to 500 images per session.

Resize with Sharp (Node.js)

sharp('input.jpg').resize(2048, 2048, { fit: 'inside' }).webp({ quality: 82 }).toFile('output.webp') — the fastest non-GUI option for batches of 10,000+ images.

Resize with Seegea

Select products in the grid, set target dimensions and WebP quality, preview 5 sample images, apply. The resized images replace originals in Shopify or PrestaShop immediately. Rollback available.
Never upscale a small image to 2048×2048. A 400×400 px source stretched to 2048×2048 produces a blurry, pixelated image that is worse than the original. Set a minimum source quality standard (at least 1000×1000 px) before resizing up.

Bulk resize at catalog scale

Resizing 8,000 product images (2,000 products × 4 images each) is a task that takes 2 days manually in Photoshop and 30 minutes with Seegea. The difference: Seegea processes images in parallel, applies the correct Lanczos resampling, converts to WebP and pushes to Shopify or PrestaShop in a single operation.

Built in France between Annecy and Chantilly, Seegea handles the full image pipeline — resize, compress, convert, alt text, push — for Shopify and PrestaShop catalogs from 200 to 100,000 SKUs.

FAQ

Google Shopping requires a minimum of 100×100 px for non-apparel products and 250×250 px for apparel. In practice, images below 800×800 px receive lower algorithmic priority. The recommended standard is 1000×1000 px minimum, with 2000×2000 px for high-quality zoom.
