A well-designed quantity discount increases average order value without degrading value perception. Poorly designed, it cannibilizes margin without meaningfully driving volume. This guide gives you the right methods to structure, calculate and roll out quantity discounts on Shopify and PrestaShop.

Why quantity discounts work

Quantity discounts leverage two psychological mechanisms:

  • Reward — the customer feels they are getting a good deal by ordering more.
  • Commitment — once they are targeting a tier, they are psychologically committed to completing the order.

Measurable outcome: sites that clearly display their quantity tiers have on average 15 to 25% higher average order value on the products concerned (Seegea internal data, customer data 2024-2025).

How to structure quantity tiers

Entry tier (from 3 units)

5% off from 3 units: the customer often orders 1, but if the discount is visible, they switch to 3. Particularly effective on consumables (skincare, food, stationery) and products typically given as sets.

Volume tier (from 10 units)

10 to 15% from 10 units: targets small professionals and repeat buyers. Often the tier that generates the most value on a mass-market catalog.

Bulk tier (from 25 or 50 units)

20 to 30% off: targets resellers and key accounts. At this level, the discount must cover your per-unit logistics cost. Do not offer it if your margin does not allow.

Calculating quantity discounts: the margin method

Before defining a tier, calculate your gross margin on the product:

  1. Gross margin = selling price minus purchase cost (excluding logistics costs)
  2. Marginal logistics cost = additional packaging cost plus fraction of picking
  3. Maximum sustainable discount = gross margin minus marginal logistics cost minus desired minimum margin

Example: product sold at $29, purchase cost $10, gross margin $19. Marginal logistics cost $2/additional unit. Desired minimum margin $10. Maximum discount = 19 minus 2 minus 10 = $7, or 24%.

The 3 classic mistakes on quantity discounts

  • Too many tiers — beyond 4 to 5 levels, the customer no longer understands. Simplify.
  • Tiers not visible on the product page — a quantity discount not clearly shown on the product page generates no cart effect. Check the Shopify or PrestaShop theme being used.
  • Uncontrolled stackable discounts — if a customer can combine a quantity discount with a promo code and a customer discount, you may end up with negative margin. Configure exclusions explicitly.
