H1 tag: the #1 rule of on-page SEO

The H1 tag is the main visible title of a web page. In SEO, it is the strongest hierarchical signal after the title tag. A page without a clear H1, or with multiple H1s, sends an ambiguous signal to Google.

The H1 tag is the main title of a web page — the one the user reads first upon arrival. Google uses it as a strong semantic signal to understand the page subject. On a 5,000-product catalog, each listing needs a unique, descriptive H1 aligned with the title tag.

H1 fundamentals in e-commerce

  • One H1 per page — Google handles multiple H1s but single-H1 pages rank better.
  • Unique across the site — "Our products" on 500 pages = zero signal.
  • Main keyword included — ideally in the first 5 words.
  • Aligned with title tag — same intent, complementary formulations.
  • Visible above the fold — an H1 at the bottom of the page weighs less than one at the top.

Product H1 formula

"[Brand] [Product] [Main attribute] [Secondary attribute]". Example: "Salomon XT-6 Women Trail Black 2026". Specific, unique, searchable.

Category H1 formula

"[Products] [Attribute] — [Promise]". Example: "Women Trail Running Shoes — 280 items, next-day delivery". The category H1 can be longer as it is also the page's main text.

Article H1 formula

"[Topic]: [Promise]". Example: "How to choose trail running shoes in 2026: the complete guide". A promise in the article H1 increases time on page.
H1ProblemSEO impact
"Product"Not unique, no keywordZero — ranks on nothing
"XT-6"Too short, no contextRanks only on the exact reference
"Salomon XT-6 Women Black Trail"NoneRanks on the long-tail query
"Women Trail Shoes — 280 items"NoneRanks on the category query
On Shopify, the product title automatically becomes the H1 of the product page. If your product title is just "XT-6", your H1 is "XT-6" — and the page only ranks on that exact term. Enrich product titles with brand, type, and key attribute.

FAQ

Technically yes in HTML5. In practice for SEO, one H1 is the universal recommendation. Google states it can handle multiple H1s, but correlation studies show pages with a single H1 tend to rank better. Stick to one H1 per page.
