Category page SEO: structure, copy, internal linking

Category pages are the most strategically important pages of an e-commerce site for SEO. They target generic high-volume queries ("women trail running shoes") that no individual product page can rank for. Yet they are the most neglected in terms of on-page SEO optimization.

Category pages (collections on Shopify) are the entry point for generic search traffic. They target high-volume queries like "women trail shoes" that no product page can compete for. Optimizing them is the highest-ROI SEO investment on an e-commerce site.

Category page SEO checklist

  • Title tag: "[Category] [Attribute] — [N] items | [Store]"
  • H1: same intent as title, can be longer
  • Meta description: 150-160 chars, mentions number of products and key attributes
  • Category text: 100-300 words unique content, above or below the grid
  • Internal links: link to subcategories and top products
  • Canonical: self-referencing, filter URLs point to base category

Category title formula

"[Products] [Attribute] — [N] items | [Store]"
Example: "Women Trail Running Shoes — 280 items | RunningPro"
The product count signals freshness and reassures the user.

Category description

Add 100-200 words above or below the product grid. Cover: what the category contains, what to look for when buying, key brands. This creates unique content Google can index and rank.

Filter URL management

All filter URLs (?color=red&sort=price) must have a canonical pointing to the base category URL. Never index filter pages — they dilute crawl budget and create thousands of near-duplicates.

On Shopify, the collection description field accepts HTML. Add a 150-word description with your target keyword and 2-3 internal links to subcategories. This is one of the highest-ROI changes on a Shopify store for SEO.

FAQ

A category page targets generic browse-intent queries ("women trail shoes"). A product page targets specific buy-intent queries ("Salomon XT-6 women black"). Category pages need category-specific content (not just a product grid) and their own title, H1, and meta description.
