Product sitemap: segment to speed up indexing

A product sitemap is a separate XML sitemap dedicated to your product pages. On a 10,000-product catalog, separating product URLs from category and blog URLs lets you monitor indexation independently and spot content quality issues faster.

A product sitemap is a dedicated XML sitemap listing only product page URLs. Separating it from category and blog sitemaps allows more granular monitoring in Search Console and faster diagnosis of indexation issues on the product catalog.

Segmented monitoring

With a separate product sitemap in Search Console, you can see the indexation rate specifically for products — vs. categories and blog posts. If products are 60% indexed but categories are 95%, that points to thin content on product pages.

Real-time lastmod

When a product price changes, update its lastmod in the sitemap. Googlebot prioritizes recrawling recently modified pages — critical for flash promotions or stock updates that need to appear in Google Shopping.

Exclude non-indexable URLs

Never include in the sitemap: filter URLs, paginated pages, noindex products, or out-of-stock products you plan to discontinue. Each non-indexable URL in the sitemap sends a contradictory signal to Google.

On Shopify, the auto-generated sitemap.xml is segmented by type (products, collections, pages, blog posts). Submit the root sitemap.xml URL in Search Console — Shopify handles the rest. Verify each segment's indexation rate quarterly.

FAQ

A dedicated product sitemap allows you to monitor indexation rates specifically for products in Search Console. If products are 60% indexed but categories are 95%, that signals a content quality issue specifically on products — not a general technical problem.
