Configurable product: when and how to offer one

A configurable product lets the buyer assemble their purchase from options — custom engraving, build-to-order hardware, personalized gifts. The catalog challenge is keeping the complexity manageable on both the admin and customer side.

A configurable product is powerful for conversion — buyers who configure their purchase commit to it more strongly than buyers selecting from a dropdown. The catalog challenge is that the complexity of configuration must not leak into your admin or your feed management.

Three categories of configurable products

Predefined options only

The buyer chooses from fixed options (color, size, finish). This is a standard variant product — Shopify and PrestaShop handle it natively. The catalog task is keeping option values consistent and variant prices accurate.

Predefined options + free text

A base product with standard options plus a custom field (engraved name, printed text, uploaded logo). Needs a line item property or configurator app in addition to the standard variant setup.

Fully built-to-order

The final product does not exist until the buyer configures it: custom PC specs, bespoke furniture dimensions, made-to-measure clothing. These require a configurator app, a custom price calculation and usually a manual production workflow.

Keep the configurable product page SEO-focused on the base product, not the configuration options. The title should describe the product type, not all possible configurations. Custom configuration details live in structured data and the configurator UI.

Catalog data quality for configurable products

Even highly configurable products need a clean base product record: a clear title, a complete description, accurate base price, quality images of the unconfigurated state, and correct metafields. This base record is what Seegea manages.

When a configurator app generates hundreds of virtual variants or order line properties, the underlying product data quality determines whether your Google Shopping feed, your order confirmation emails, and your logistics workflows function correctly. Created in France between Annecy and Chantilly, Seegea supports this base layer for Shopify and PrestaShop merchants.

FAQ

A configurable product has buyer-defined options that affect the final item — not just which predefined variant to ship, but what to build or personalize. Examples: a custom T-shirt with a printed name, a PC with chosen RAM and CPU, a jewelry piece with a chosen stone and metal.
